Solving the Full Power Puzzle on N495DV

An in-depth look at the technical challenges we faced when restoring the Velocity 173 SE-RG Elite to true airworthy performance.

In 2022, N495DV proudly received its FAA airworthiness certificate, but the celebration was short-lived. Initial flight tests revealed a critical flaw that would have sent many builders packing: the engine simply could not produce full takeoff power. This technical roadblock required us to dive deep into the fuel delivery, induction, and propeller pitch systems in our Texas hangar.

Diagnosing the Canard Powerplant

Unlike traditional aircraft, the pusher configuration of the Velocity SE-RG Elite presents unique cooling and airflow dynamics. We systematically analyzed the fuel injection system, looking for pressure drops that could starve the engine at high RPMs. By combining modern diagnostic tools with old-fashioned hangar resourcefulness, we began to untangle the air-to-fuel ratio mystery.

The Eighty Five Percent Standard

With Paul Lasen securing the necessary high-grade components and engine parts, we spared no effort in rebuilding the system to flawless standards. Every sensor was recalibrated and every line pressure checked to ensure that when N495DV finally advanced the throttle, the response was instantaneous. It was a rigorous masterclass in patience, safety, and true experimental craftsmanship.
